My ceiling fan has a rattle that seems to be coming from the inside of the fan. The fan itself doesn’t wiggle or seem off kilter. The rattling is kind of intermittent, but is going on more often than not. I’ve read somewhere that it could be something to do with ball bearings.
I’m curious to know if anyone can give me advice on how to fix it. (Or if I should just replace it)
Buy a ceiling fan balancing kit….inexpensive and easy to do…Ceck all blades and bulbs too before balancing as mentioned prior to this…Here is a link and picture showing you what you may need.
It does sound like you have run a bearing. Probably not worth fixing. Just get a new one fitted
From my experience with my ceiling fans, there are a couple of things. One, double check the weights on the fans. Then if that’s not it, the base of fan (mounted to the ceiling) sometimes has a screw so that you can remove the plating. There are screws under the plate that may need tightening. The last item, yes, may be the bearings. Depending on the cost of the fan, in the end may be easier just to replace the fan. You may have to price out the parts at a hardware store or Home Depot to see if cost effective to repair.
the fans today don’t have ball bearings,it could that that one of your blades is loose tighten all your blades and see if that does sometimes they become unbalanced.
Bearings usually squall not rattle. If you can take it down, clean it real good top to bottom. it might just be a loose screw inside the cover.
I had the same problem with my fan and i couldn’t find ant thing wrong with it i tried to live with the noise but it just got louder and i could’nt take it any more. So i studied the fan real close and found the the light fixture that is on it was throwing the fan of a little and it stopped making noise for about 20 min. then when i looked at it again i noticed that the light bulg inside the fixture had moved enough to knock against the shade. Now it’s doing fine. My suggestion is if it is a bearing you could try to grease it and check the lights fixture on it if there is one. And if all else fails get a new one. Hope that helps you.
Pretty much everyone here gave you sound advice.
Intermittent clatter may be something loose or off balance.
However nowdays you may just replace the fan with less stress than trying to repair it.
Summer time is when ceiling fans go on sale.
try tightening the blades and then where the blades attach
