Replacing a ceiling fan with light, I found two black wires . I need to know how to proceed?

May 14th, 2010

I am guessing that one is hot and the other not. But which wires to the fan to connect to the hot black in the ceiling. There are three main wires, the red, the black and the white. A green ground is also included too but that seems to be a different problem. Two wires on the old fan where together. Which two and do they connect to the hot? I know this is an out of date situation, but for the time being it is all we can manage.

Any advice on fixing this problem would be appreciated.

Light turned on but both switches on fan worked light and fan would not work-so what is the right combo here? Do not have instruction book anymore.

When installing a ceiling fan using a swag/chain/cord how would you ground it?

April 9th, 2010

The grounding wire that comes with the fan is just an uninsulated wire that would be okay if it were run through the wall but not okay in a swag use.Is it really necessary to ground it.
There is no electrical connection in the ceiling.
I will be attaching the fan to a bracket on the ceiling which is sturdily attached to the joists. My question is about grounding. The swag/cord is just for connecting the electrical outlet.
